Sound Solutions for Replacing the Bonner Bridge in North Carolina
 Everyone agrees: The Herbert Bonner Bridge connecting Bodie and
Hatteras Islands in North Carolina's Outer Banks needs to be
replaced.
Everyone did agree: In 2003, the 14 state and federal agencies
working on the replacement project agreed that the long bridge
alternative, bypassing the the troubled highway NC-12 through Pea
Island National Wildlife Refuge, was the best solution. Construction
was proposed to begin in August, 2006. Then politics got in the way.
It is time to build the long bridge. It's safer, more reliable, cost
effective, and environmentally sound.
